Race and Performance in East Asia working group started in 2016 as part of the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR). Each year, we invite working papers on dance, theatre, performance, and other instances of visual and embodied expressions that articulate racial politics in East Asia (broadly defined), which shape and get reworked by the region's unique sociopolitical and cultural contexts.
Our aim is to provide graduate students and scholars with a platform for engaging in a much-needed conversation around racial politics and performance in East Asia within the performance and theatre studies scholarship. We also aim to build an online archive and resources depository for East Asian performance-related teaching and research.
